Khirsapat mango of Chapainawabganj, popularly known as Himsagar, yesterday got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the local intellectual property right authority — a development that is expected to help growers get better prices and benefit consumers.

The popular summer fruit has become the third product after hilsa fish and jamdani to get the distinction.


he ‘Himsagar’ mango is a popular mango cultivar, originating in the modern-day state of West Bengal in India. The inside is yellow to orange in color and does not have any fiber. The fruit is medium-sized and weighs between 250 and 350 grams, out of which the pulp content is around 77%. It has good keeping quality. It is also known as Khirsapati. It was registered as one of the Geographical Indication from West Bengal on 9 Sep 2008.
